Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about the WRC Knowledge Hub, research access, and the Water Research Commission.

What is the WRC Knowledge Hub?
The WRC Knowledge Hub is the Water Research Commission's digital library, providing open access to over 1,195 research reports, publications, and resources on water science, management, and innovation in South Africa.
Is access to research reports free?
Yes. All research reports and publications are freely available for download. Simply create a free account to access bookmarking, saved searches, and personalised features.
How do I search for specific research?
Use the Search page to enter keywords, author names, or topics. You can filter results by year, subject, document type, and research programme. The system uses full-text search across titles, abstracts, and report numbers.
Can I download reports?
Yes. Each report has a Download button that opens the PDF directly from the WRC document repository. Downloads are tracked to help us understand which research is most valuable.
How do bookmarks work?
Registered users can bookmark any report by clicking the bookmark icon on a report card. Saved bookmarks are accessible from the My Bookmarks page in your account.
What is the difference between Keywords, Subjects, and Document Types?
Keywords are broad thematic tags (e.g. Water Quality, Climate, Governance). Subjects are more specific research domains (e.g. Mine Water, Sanitation, Drinking Water). Document Types classify the publication format (e.g. Research Report, Brief, Water Wheel Magazine).
How do I report an error in a report record?
Please email info@wrc.org.za with the report number and a description of the error. Our team will review and correct the record.
What is the Water Research Commission?
The Water Research Commission (WRC) was established in 1971 and is South Africa's premier water research funding and knowledge management organisation. It funds research, develops human capital, and disseminates knowledge to support the sustainable management of South Africa's water resources.
How can my organisation partner with the WRC?
The WRC welcomes research partnerships with universities, government departments, NGOs, and the private sector. Visit www.wrc.org.za for information on calls for proposals, bursaries, and collaboration opportunities.
Are older reports from before 2010 available?
The Knowledge Hub is continuously growing. Reports from the WRC's full archive dating back to 1971 are being progressively digitised and added. Use the year filter on the Search page to browse by publication period.
