Abstract
This is the first nationally coordinated assessment of microplastic contamination in South African rivers, reservoirs, and drinking water sources. Sampling across 18 sites in six river systems detected microplastics at all sites, with highest concentrations downstream of urban centres and wastewater discharges. Characterisation of polymer types, shapes, and sizes is presented. Drinking water treatment efficacy for microplastic removal is evaluated and health-based provisional guideline values are proposed.
