Abstract
Constructed wetlands are increasingly used in South Africa for treating a range of wastewater streams including domestic sewage, mine drainage, agricultural runoff, and industrial effluent. This compendium collates design specifications, 10-year performance data, and O&M lessons from 35 South African constructed wetland installations. Statistical performance ranges for BOD, TSS, nitrogen, phosphorus, and faecal coliform removal are presented, enabling more robust design parameters for future installations.
