WIN-SA Case Study: Successful Greywater Reuse in Informal Settlements — eThekwini
Published: 28 February 2020
Report No: WIN-SA CS 014/20

Abstract
The eThekwini Water and Sanitation unit piloted greywater reuse systems in five informal settlement areas of Durban between 2016 and 2019, treating 45-litre-per-household-per-day of greywater in simple backyard sand filters for garden irrigation and toilet flushing. This WIN-SA case study documents project design, community engagement, performance results, cost recovery, and lessons for scaling the approach to other South African cities.
